Distorted anatomy in the child with cleft palate interferes with his ability to make certain sounds in speech. Physicians should be aware of the goals of palatal reconstruction and of the clinical methods of speech analysis. A glossary of spoken sounds, and discussion of technics for determining suitability for speech training, are presented here.
