Failure of Pulse Oximetry to Detect Severe Hypoxia: Importance of Sensor Selection
Pulse oximetry is an effective method for non-invasive monitoring of arterial saturation. Clinically important overestimates of arterial saturation have not been previously reported. The magnitude of arterial desaturation in an infant with tetralogy of Fallot undergoing cardiac catheterization was not recorded correctly because of selection of an inappropriate probe for the patient's size.
