Conclusive evaluation of specificity hypotheses, relat ing to emotional conflicts or personality types, is lacking, yet these theories continue to exert their influence. A reactive-interactive model is elaborated whereby a number of psychological processes exacerbate and maintain the disorder. Management strategies and psychiatric involvement are discussed.
