One of the challenges facing physicians today is to detect school learning prob lems as early as possible. As one possible approach, a screening scale was con structed which can be carried out by the physician while doing a physical exam on five-year-olds. This scale, the "Preschool Readiness Experimental Screening Scale," or "PRESS," was administered to 75 children along with a standard preschool readiness test and an IQ test. The results indicate the PRESS is a valid indicator of school readiness and does reflect IQ. The concept of pre school screening by physicians is tenable and we urge further studies in this area.
