Low Birth Weight Babies in the Hospital

A Survey of Recent Changes in Their Care, With Special Emphasis on Early Discharge

Charles H. Bauer

Department of Pediatrics, Roosevelt Hospital

Wendy Tinklepaugh

The Roosevelt Hospital, New York City 10019

Fifty-seven low weight infants, averaging 1,879 g at birth, were sent home from the newborn nursery with an average weight of only 2,079 g. There was no unusual morbidity or mortality later on. Thus early discharge from modern hospital nurseries of thriving premature infants who are going to good homes to re ceive good care has many economic and psychologic advantages.
