Music and the Modern Generation

Martin Nacman, A.C.S.W.

Division of Social Services; Associate Professor, Department of Health Services, Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, New York 14620

Music occupies a central position in the life of adolescents, and reflects the val ues, experiences and influences that are part of this age group. The negative reaction of many adults to the musical tastes and choices of adolescents has served to widen the "generation gap," thereby reducing the chances of establish ing working relationships between adolescents and adults, including a long list of professionals, with whom they come in contact. If we are to come closer to ado lescents, we must learn to understand their music and their attitudes toward it.
